CHAPTER THIRTEEN

By the end of the night, the group had managed to scrounge up just enough water to make it through to the next day.

Not surprisingly, the girls brought in more water than the boys. Hayley was the overall breadwinner, proving her worth by collecting two canteens full of water, which was enough to hydrate over half of the group. She felt no shame in admitting that what she had traded for it wasn't food.

Cade did well in gathering intelligence. He found out that the missions were, in fact, still playable, though few people had braved them. Apparently, once you portaled in, you were unable to portal out until the mission was complete. This made them all the more risky.

As the group settled down to watch the news before heading to bed, they were reminded of the day's events when a new staggering death toll rolled in. According to reliable sources, there were now less than a hundred thousand players left in the game.

“Well, at least we shouldn't have to worry about server crashes anymore,” Cade said, though it was as grim as it was hopeful.

“Never say never,” Brandon commented dryly.

“I didn't say never,” Cade corrected him.

Brandon scowled but didn't bother to argue his point. “Well, we should all go to sleep. It's going to be another big day tomorrow, and the sooner we wake up, the better.” He looked over at Hayley, who had passed out on the sofa shortly after bringing the water back to the room. Then he stretched and sprawled out across the sofa opposite from her.

“We'll need to remember to get more food, too, since that baka over there traded all of his for half a canteen of water.” Cade glared at Matt. The idiot never ceased to amaze him.

Matt rolled his eyes. It had been hard enough finding anyone with water as it was, let alone someone willing to trade with him for it.

Liv nuzzled up under Matt's arm and kissed his chest. “Can we have a funeral for Deidre tomorrow when you guys get back?”

“Of course,” he told her before kissing her on the forehead.

“I was thinking that myself,” Cade said, wrapping his arm tighter around Shelby, who already looked like she was about to fall asleep.

“Bedtime,” she mouthed up to him.

“Yup. Bedtime,” he replied, and then they settled in together to sleep.

Matt found it strange that they slept sitting up. It was something that he doubted would ever happen in real life. They looked way too uncomfortable.

“You should get to sleep, too.” Liv straightened to look at Matt.

“In a little while. I want to spend more time with you.” He smiled as he brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

“I love you,” she whispered and then waited for him to lean down to kiss her.

Matt's lips pressed softly against hers with affection that she found to be too gentle. Liv longed to taste his mouth, but he kissed like he was in grade school most of the time. She pursued Matt as he pulled away, gently nibbling on his lower lip in the hopes that he would want more.
